Sometimes the weather doesn’t co-operate, or the time between naps is too short to get out of the house. But staying in all day with a baby or toddler can cause cabin fever. Here are five indoor activities that will help pass the time, and put you and your child in a great mood.

Hide-and-seek
Peekaboo and hide-and-seek never get old. Hiding games are lots of fun for a toddler.

You can “hide” in plain sight with your face hidden and your baby will be thrilled at their cleverness in discovering you. Older babies and toddlers can actually hide — and be forced to stifle their giggles — while you search in drawers, under sofas, and everywhere they aren’t.

Squishy obstacle course
Creating an obstacle course to encourage an older baby or toddler’s physical confidence is great fun.

Stack pillows and sofa cushions to turn your living room into a maze and hide cuddly toys along the route. Add unexpected touches like plastic bowls and crinkly magazines to your play area, too. Babies can practise their rolling and crawling while toddlers take the course on foot.

If you’re feeling bored on a nothing’s-happening afternoon, you and your little one will enjoy the change of pace. And without bedtime looming, you won’t need to keep one eye on the clock.

Tip: Throw in some special toys or introduce a new bath book for extra fun.
Toddler dancing with dad

Dance party
Lazy days can get a jolt of energy with a bit of dancing. Turn on some fun music and dance until you both fall down.

Use props such as scarves and instruments, or just feel the beat with your body. Encourage your toddler to spin, jump, kick, and wave their hands in the air.

Super sink time
Slide a stool over to your bathroom or kitchen sink and let your toddler climb up. Fill the sink with warm, soapy water, plastic cups, utensils, and a squirt toy. The’ll have so much fun mimicking you, they’ll never guess that washing dishes isn’t a game.

Tip: Keep a close eye on this activity for safety reasons — and to control the size of the soapy mess your child will inevitably create.
